JioHotstar has the broadest content catalogue of any Indian streaming platform — Star content, Disney and Marvel libraries, Fox films, Hulu originals, Star International productions, and a deep archive of Indian cinema and sport. The homepage shows you none of this. It shows you what is trending today and what the platform spent money making last quarter.
Below that, buried by the algorithm, is a consistent stream of some of the best films of the last decade.
Streaming availability on JioHotstar India shifts — verify current availability before you plan your evening. The films are permanent. The platform access is not.
Watchaao Quick Decision
Want a quiet film that will rearrange your thinking? Nomadland.
Want something visually extraordinary and emotionally complex? The Shape of Water or The Banshees of Inisherin.
Want a coming-of-age film that earns its warmth? Lady Bird.
Want a film about grief, history, and community? Belfast.
Want a film that will make you furious and hopeful simultaneously? Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Nomadland (2020)
A woman loses her home and her community when the town she lived in shuts down. She begins living and working from her van, moving with the seasons.
Chloé Zhao's film won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress, and all three were deserved. Frances McDormand gives the quietest extraordinary performance in recent cinema — a performance more about presence than action. The film's non-professional cast of real nomadic workers gives it a documentary texture that no amount of production design could replicate.
Best for: Viewers who want a film that moves slowly and leaves a permanent mark. Who might skip: Those who need conventional narrative momentum. Nomadland is a mood and an argument.
Watchaao verdict: The most important film of 2020. Deserves every award it received and more attention than it has.
The Shape of Water (2017)
A mute cleaning woman at a government research facility forms a bond with an amphibious creature being held captive there.
Guillermo del Toro's film is a fairy tale for adults — romantic, strange, and constructed with an extraordinary precision of visual design. Sally Hawkins gives a completely physical performance without dialogue. Michael Shannon is one of cinema's great screen villains. The film won Best Picture and is more strange and personal than most Best Picture winners manage to be.
Best for: Viewers who want a film that is both commercially entertaining and genuinely singular. Who might skip: Those who require realism. The Shape of Water is a fantasy told in cinematic language.
Watchaao verdict: Del Toro's masterpiece. A love story that could only be told through film.
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Two lifelong friends on a remote Irish island in 1923. One of them decides he no longer wants to be friends. The other cannot accept it.
Martin McDonagh's film is the funniest and most devastating film of 2022. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are extraordinary — Gleeson's Colm in particular gives one of the great screen portraits of creative despair. The film operates as black comedy, character study, and allegory simultaneously. Its ending sits with you for days.
Best for: Viewers willing to sit with a film about friendship, artistic purpose, and the specific misery of being the person left behind. Who might skip: Those who need a film to resolve neatly. The Banshees of Inisherin asks questions it does not answer.
Watchaao verdict: One of the best films of the decade. Funnier and darker than you expect, sometimes in the same sentence.
Lady Bird (2017)
A seventeen-year-old in Sacramento in 2002 applies to East Coast colleges, fights with her mother, falls in and out of love, and tries to become someone she has not yet decided to be.
Greta Gerwig's debut feature is the most precise coming-of-age film of the 2010s. Saoirse Ronan's performance is one of the decade's best. The film is funny and specific and does not sentimentalise its subject — it simply observes, and the observation is devastating. The final scene is a masterclass in restraint.
Best for: Everyone. Lady Bird works across generations and genders and contexts. Who might skip: Viewers who find coming-of-age films too predictable. Lady Bird sidesteps every expectation of the genre.
Watchaao verdict: One of the most rewatchable films in this guide. Gets better with every viewing.
Belfast (2021)
A nine-year-old boy in Belfast, 1969, as the Troubles begin and his family faces a decision about whether to stay.
Kenneth Branagh's autobiographical film is shot in black-and-white and structured as a series of intimate family moments inside a political crisis. The performances from Jude Hill as the boy and Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan as his parents are extraordinary. The film is warm without being sentimental, specific without excluding viewers who know nothing about Northern Irish history.
Best for: Anyone who wants a film about family, place, and the cost of leaving. Who might skip: Those who expect the political crisis to be foregrounded. Belfast is a domestic film set against a historical backdrop.
Watchaao verdict: The most accessible film on this list. Genuinely moving. One of Branagh's finest works.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
A mother rents three billboards on the edge of town to confront the sheriff who has failed to solve her daughter's murder. Everyone in town has an opinion about it.
Martin McDonagh's previous film (he also made The Banshees of Inisherin) is his most commercially energetic work. Frances McDormand won the Oscar; Sam Rockwell won the Oscar. The film is angry, funny, and morally genuine — it asks what justice means when the people responsible for it are compromised in ways that are understandable. The screenplay is the best of its year.
Best for: Viewers who want a film that argues with itself and refuses a comfortable resolution. Who might skip: Those who need clear moral categories. Three Billboards complicates everyone it introduces.
Watchaao verdict: The most energetic film on this list. McDonagh and McDormand make films that feel like nothing else.
